A Tragic Accident: One Life Lost as Train Collides with Car at Level Crossing
In a heart-wrenching incident, a person has tragically lost their life in a horrific train-car collision at Dimmocks Cote level crossing in Ely, Cambridgeshire. British Transport Police (BTP) were swiftly called to the scene around 10:15 am on Tuesday, March 3, after reports of a collision between a train and a car.
The BTP spokesperson confirmed the tragic loss of life, stating that officers and paramedics attended the scene, but unfortunately, a person was pronounced dead at the spot. Another individual received treatment for minor injuries.
The accident has caused significant disruption to train services, with all trains between Ely and Cambridge North halted. Great Northern advised travelers to postpone their journeys until later in the day. National Rail anticipated 'major disruption' until approximately 4 pm.
Inrix, a traffic and data monitoring company, reported that the A1123 Newmarket Road was blocked in both directions due to the accident, with slow traffic caused by a train and a car on a level crossing between Fodderfen Drove (Upware) and Petersfield (Stretham).
A statement from National Rail detailed that the collision at the level crossing between Waterbeach and Ely had closed all lines between these stations, resulting in no train services between Cambridge North and Ely. This has created a direct route disruption between Cambridge and Ely, with services revised to terminate and start at different stations. Waterbeach will not be served.
