Soshi Otsuki's East-West Tailoring at Pitti Uomo: A Fusion of Cultures (2026)

Soshi Otsuki's Cult East-West Tailoring Hits Pitti Uomo

Soshi Otsuki's creative journey with Italy is deeply rooted in a unique blend of Japanese precision and Western menswear codes, particularly inspired by the Italian sartorial tradition of laid-back elegance. His personal heroes include the late Giorgio Armani, whose influence is evident in Otsuki's work. In an interview, Otsuki shared his creative philosophy: 'I see my process as filtering Western sensibility through a Japanese mindset.'

After a decade of exploring this duality, Otsuki is now making a reverse trip, both physically and creatively. He has been showcasing his oversized suits inspired by 80s power dressing, gaining cult status. Now, he's presenting a collection that re-exports the story of Italian suits flowing into Japan in the opposite direction. Otsuki's participation at Pitti Uomo feels like a significant moment, as he respects the rules while subtly shifting them.

Otsuki was also invited to create outfits for Pitti Uomo's campaign, centered around the theme of 'Motion'. This Euro trip marks his second major overseas journey in recent months, following his win at the 2025 LVMH Prize for Young Designers in Paris. Otsuki's success in the competition, which attracted over 2,300 applicants, has brought relief and validation to his independent fashion talent, addressing challenges like cash flow.

Otsuki's brand, established in 2015, has been focusing on 'validation' in recent months. He signed a deal with Tomorrow, a brand development platform, to represent Soshi Otsuki's wholesale operations and expand internationally. The U.S. is currently the brand's biggest market, but tariffs have impacted growth. Otsuki's approach to tailoring reflects his East-West vision, combining Japanese precision with Italian sensuality.

The upcoming show in Florence will showcase his signature roomy tailoring with linings inspired by kimono sleeves and jackets wrapped like karate uniforms. The color palette will feature various shades of gray, with Otsuki emphasizing its use as a signature color. This will be Otsuki's first show outside Japan, held at the Santa Maria Novella Refectory, chosen for its subtle decorations and natural light.
