A Protester's Words Spark International Backlash: PTI Scrambles to Distance Itself
A recent protest in the UK has thrown Pakistan's political landscape into turmoil. A video, originally posted on the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) UK page and later deleted, shows a woman at a Bradford demonstration making a chilling statement, wishing harm upon an unnamed individual. But here's where it gets controversial: while surrounded by PTI flags, the woman's inflammatory words have led to a swift and decisive response from the party, eager to avoid association with such rhetoric.
The fallout has been swift. Pakistan issued a formal demarche to the acting British High Commissioner, demanding action against those involved. The Foreign Office spokesperson emphasized the seriousness of the situation, urging the UK to hold accountable those responsible for inciting violence against Pakistan's leadership.
PTI, facing criticism from various quarters, was quick to condemn the protester's remarks. Sheikh Waqas Akram, PTI's Central Information Secretary, issued a strong statement, categorically denying any connection between the party and the woman's speech. He stressed that she holds no position within PTI and her views are entirely her own.
Akram went on to reiterate PTI's core principles, emphasizing their unwavering opposition to violence, hate speech, and inflammatory language. He highlighted the party's commitment to democratic, constitutional, and peaceful political struggle, stating that PTI does not condone any behavior that contradicts these values.
And this is the part most people miss: The incident comes amidst escalating tensions between PTI and the Punjab government. PTI accuses the Punjab government of deliberately sabotaging a peaceful visit by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and his delegation. They allege that the Punjab government orchestrated roadblocks, physical intimidation, and humiliating treatment within the Punjab Assembly, culminating in the forcible ejection of elected representatives.
PTI views these actions as a blatant disregard for democratic norms and federal respect. They see the heavy police presence at Liberty Chowk, intended to stop a peaceful rally, as a sign of the ruling party's growing fear of public dissent.
The situation was further exacerbated by the presence of individuals posing as journalists, who, according to PTI, were not there to report but to provoke and incite provincial hatred. Akram condemned the use of such tactics, particularly the targeting of a constitutional office-holder with baseless and demeaning allegations. He called upon responsible media organizations to hold accountable those who abuse the profession of journalism for personal gain or to further divisive agendas.
The opposition alliance, Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP), echoed PTI's concerns, condemning the Punjab Police's treatment of Afridi and his delegation. They characterized the actions as rude, inhumane, and reflective of a defeated mindset.
