Pixel Launcher Replaced? Google App Takes Over Home Screen Search (What This Means) (2026)

Google's App Update: A Step Back or a Forward Leap?

Google's recent update to the Pixel Launcher search bar has sparked debate among users. The update, announced as part of the November 2025 Feature Drop, introduces a fullscreen experience powered by the Google app, replacing the previous translucent sheet with your wallpaper remaining visible at the top. This change, while seemingly small, has significant implications for users.

The new search bar, located at the bottom of the homescreen, now opens a different screen powered by the Google app, which is several years old. This experience is identical to what users get on every other Android device when they tap the Google Search bar homescreen widget. While you can still launch apps, you lose app search and shortcuts for essential apps like Clock, Contacts, Pixel Tips, Play Store, Settings, and Wallet.

Google's explanation for this change is that it provides easier access to AI Mode, their most powerful AI search experience. The button for AI Mode, located to the right of the voice search and Lens options, allows users to quickly start and resume AI Mode journeys, digging deeper into the web. Additionally, the top row now displays more suggested apps, making it seamless to continue exploring on your device.

However, the main point of this update seems to be more immediate access to past AI Mode queries, which some users find unnecessary. This change feels like a regression, especially considering the potential for the Google app to modernize this screen. Users can still access the old Pixel Launcher search via the bar at the top of the app grid, but enabling this feature breaks muscle memory.

Despite the controversy, Google's update highlights the ongoing evolution of Android's user interface. While some may view this change as a step backward, others see it as a necessary evolution to enhance the user experience. The debate continues, and users are invited to share their thoughts in the comments.
