NASA's Artemis II: America's Return to the Moon with a Crewed Lunar Orbit Mission (2026)

NASA's Artemis II mission is set to make history as it prepares to send a crew of four astronauts on a journey around the moon, marking the first time in over 50 years that American astronauts will venture to our celestial neighbor. But here's where it gets controversial: Some experts argue that the mission's focus on lunar orbit may be a step backward, rather than a leap forward in space exploration. Despite this, the mission is a significant milestone, offering a unique opportunity to learn and grow.

The Artemis II spacecraft, a result of NASA's innovative SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and Orion spacecraft integration, embarked on its journey from the Vehicle Assembly Building to Launch Pad 39B around 9 a.m. ET. The four-mile trek, which could take up to 12 hours, is a testament to the complexity and precision required in space missions.

NASA director Jared Isaacman emphasized the mission's potential, stating, 'The architecture you see behind us here with SLS and the Orion spacecraft is just the beginning.' He added that the mission will provide valuable insights, enabling future missions to the moon and beyond, including the long-term goal of reaching Mars.

The four astronauts, Christina Koch, Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman, and Canadian Space Agency Astronaut Jeremy Hansen, will first orbit Earth before embarking on their lunar journey, which is expected to take around 10 days. The goal of the Artemis program is to eventually send Americans to the moon for the first time in over 50 years, with the longer-term goal of achieving missions to Mars.

The launch of Artemis II follows the original Artemis launch, which sent a crewless craft into space in 2022. What the lunar orbit will teach its onboard scientists, Isaacman said, 'is what's going to enable missions like Artemis 100 and beyond.' He also expressed hope that the mission would inspire future generations of astronauts, fulfilling a promise to the American people to return to the moon.
