MLB Network New Facility: Groundbreaking Ceremony for 2028 Baseball Season (2025)

Imagine a world where baseball content is even more immersive and cutting-edge. That future is closer than you think! MLB Network is embarking on a game-changing journey, setting the stage for a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility slated to be fully operational by the 2028 season. This isn't just a relocation; it's a complete reimagining of how baseball stories are told. Get ready for a whole new level of baseball broadcasting!

The Emmy Award-winning network recently held a groundbreaking ceremony, officially kicking off the countdown to their move. While the network's core mission – delivering top-notch baseball coverage – remains unchanged, the new facility promises to elevate the viewing experience to unprecedented heights.

Bill Morningstar, president of MLB Network, eloquently captured the significance of the move: "When you look at the MLB Network logo, it's built around home plate. That's symbolic because the network serves as the home for fans of baseball across the entire U.S. Today is a big moment for us." Picture this: a broadcast center designed from the ground up to celebrate America’s pastime.

The groundbreaking ceremony was a star-studded affair, attended by key figures including Morningstar himself, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, Deputy Commissioner of business and media Noah Garden, Elmwood Park Mayor Robert Colletti, and Clark Machemer, senior managing director of Crow Holdings. Crow Holdings is the real estate investment and development firm partnering with MLB and MLB Network on this ambitious project. Lauren Shehadi, a familiar face as an MLB Network host, served as the emcee for the event. A true all-star lineup for a monumental occasion!

MLB Network has become a juggernaut in sports broadcasting since its launch in 2009, racking up an impressive 42 Sports Emmy Awards across 15 categories. And to add to the excitement, the network just celebrated its most-watched season in seven years! Talk about momentum heading into this new chapter.

Commissioner Manfred emphasized the importance of a facility that matches the network's exceptional quality: "When you have a network that's won more than 40 Emmys in different categories and produces the kind of content that we see on the network every day, it needs a facility that lives up to that standard." He continued, "We settled on this building because we believe that we can build out a first-in-class production operation that's fitting for the great work." The message is clear: MLB Network deserves the best, and that's precisely what they're getting.

From the MLB Tonight: National Pregame Show to MLB Central, MLB Now, Intentional Talk, MLB Tonight, Quick Pitch, Big Inning and Play Ball, the network's diverse programming lineup provides around-the-clock coverage for baseball enthusiasts. Did you know that MLB Network produces thousands of pieces of content each year? This new facility will dramatically enhance their ability to create even more compelling and engaging content.

But MLB Network's influence extends beyond traditional broadcasting. In recent years, it has evolved into a powerhouse production house, assisting in game production for various partners, including MLB Local Media, Apple TV, Peacock, YouTube, Meta, and Roku. And this is the part most people miss... MLB Network isn't just showing baseball; it's actively involved in creating it for a vast array of platforms.

Manfred highlighted MLB Network's strategic importance in the ever-evolving media landscape: "Everyone that works in the business understands that our media environment is changing very rapidly. We deal with it every day. We manage it as best we can. But one thing that I have tried to be clear about is that the MLB Network is central to our strategic approach to the media environment. It is central because the network produces tremendous high-quality content."

He further elaborated on the network's impact on fans and players alike: "You see it, you hear it from our most avid fans; it's where they go to learn about baseball. You see it when you visit ballparks and clubhouses; players go to our network to learn about baseball, and that's probably the highest compliment that can be paid to the network and the content it produces." The fact that even professional players turn to MLB Network for insights speaks volumes about its credibility and influence.

Interestingly, the new location has a unique history. For nine decades, it housed the Marcal Paper warehouse before a devastating fire destroyed it in 2019. Crow Holdings stepped in, purchasing the property and constructing a stunning, modern industrial building inspired by the original warehouse. It's a story of resilience and rebirth, mirroring the spirit of baseball itself.

Mayor Colletti shared the town's perspective on the project: "Out of the ashes of that infamous Marcal fire came Crow Holdings. They came to the planning board, they were all open arms wanting to do the right thing for the town. I must say, they did. We insisted on a building that did not look like a warehouse, that it was the cornerstone of our town, and we would want that to be part of the new look. … They did everything right, crossed every T and dotted every I. I think it's because of that that it conjured the interest of Major League Baseball." So, the new MLB Network facility is not only a win for baseball fans but also a significant boost for the local community.

The 207,000-square-foot commercial building, expected to be fully operational for the 2028 MLB season, will house all of MLB Network's production studios and offices, as well as the Major League Baseball Film & Video Archive. This means a treasure trove of baseball history will be housed under one roof, accessible for content creation and preservation. The new facility will boast the latest cutting-edge technology and design, ensuring the network remains at the forefront of production excellence and innovation.

Machemer of Crow Holdings expressed his excitement about the partnership: "When we first heard that the Major League Baseball Network might have an interest in this building, we sort of pinched ourselves. The history of this site is really unique, and [MLB and the Network] really embody what the possibilities in the future could be." It's a collaboration built on shared vision and a commitment to excellence.

And here's where it gets controversial... Some might argue that focusing on a new facility is less important than addressing issues like game accessibility or player salaries. Is this a worthwhile investment, or could the resources be better allocated elsewhere? What do you think?

The audience at Tuesday's ceremony included personnel from MLB Network and Major League Baseball, as well as members from the project team, representing companies such as AMA, ARK, Bohler Engineering, CBRE, CJD, CMTA, Design Republic, Eligator Acoustics, Gardiner & Theobald, Jack Morton, JRM Construction, McLaren Engineering, and NEP. A true team effort to bring this vision to life!

This new facility is more than just bricks and mortar; it's an investment in the future of baseball broadcasting. It's a commitment to delivering the best possible content to fans across the country. But here's a question for you: what kind of content are you hoping to see from the new MLB Network facility? What innovations would most enhance your viewing experience?
