Mike Catt's Epic Comeback: How He Handles Jonah Lomu Abuse 30 Years Later! (2026)

Imagine being immortalized in sports history... as the guy who got steamrolled! That's the reality for Mike Catt, the English rugby player forever linked to Jonah Lomu's legendary 1995 Rugby World Cup performance. But, believe it or not, Catt has a surprisingly good attitude about it.

In a recent interview, Catt revealed his witty comeback for the fans who still bring up the infamous moment, three decades later!

The incident occurred during the 1995 semi-final in Cape Town. Twenty-year-old Lomu, a force of nature, utterly dominated the game, scoring four tries and leaving England's defense in tatters. The final score, 45-29 in New Zealand's favor, barely reflected the All Blacks' dominance.

But here's where it gets controversial... Catt's response to the constant ribbing? He points out that while Lomu's All Blacks lost the final, he went on to win the World Cup with England eight years later in Australia! He makes sure to mention this whenever he's reminded of that tough semi-final.

Appearing on Coaching Culture with Ben Herring, Catt shared his memories of the World Cup in South Africa, explaining how he handles the fans who tease him about the Lomu incident. He said, “The funny thing is, everybody forgets that eight years later I was lifting a World Cup trophy and Jonah never lifted one. Poor bugger,”

He added, “If anyone deserved to lift a World Cup trophy, it was Jonah Lomu.”

And this is the part most people miss... Catt now views the incident as hilarious. He recognizes that, despite the unfortunate circumstances, the game made him known worldwide. He said, “The way I looked at it was everybody knew who I was by the end of that World Cup, all for the wrong flipping reasons, but everyone knew who I was because of Jonah Lomu.”

Catt also recalled a pre-match team meeting where the plan to stop Lomu was quickly proven useless. The Underwood brothers were assigned to mark Lomu. The coach asked them how they would stop him, and they replied, “Oh, we are going to get in close, we’re not going to give him any space”. Eighteen hours later, Lomu had the ball with 40 meters of space and scored.

Catt's experience highlights Lomu's impact on the game. He noted, “That game was incredible. Jonah pretty much changed rugby union that World Cup.” He also gave credit to the incredible New Zealand team that included Zinzan Brooke who made a 45-meter drop goal.

Catt's story is a reminder that in sports, sometimes the most memorable moments are the ones that don't go as planned.

What do you think? Do you admire Catt's positive attitude, or do you think it's easy to be positive when you've won a World Cup?
