Measles Outbreak: 171 Cases Confirmed in 9 States, CDC Reports (2026)

A concerning surge in measles cases is sweeping across the United States, raising alarms among health officials and parents alike. According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at least 171 confirmed measles cases have been reported in nine states this year. This represents a significant increase, sparking concerns about the potential resurgence of this highly contagious disease.

The affected states include Arizona, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah, and Virginia. South Carolina is currently grappling with an ongoing outbreak that began in early October, with the majority of cases concentrated in Spartanburg County, which borders North Carolina.

But here's where it gets controversial... The state has reported at least 124 new cases since last week, according to health officials. Utah is also experiencing an outbreak that started last June, with cases now exceeding 200. Data from the Utah Department of Health and Human Services indicates that 147 of these cases are in the southwest region, but the virus has spread further north.

An official from the Southwest Utah Department of Public Health confirmed that the cases in the southwest region and further north are linked to the same measles virus that originated from an outbreak in Texas last year. David Heaton, a public information officer, stated, "Our outbreak is the same strain that was in the Texas outbreak."

Measles was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000, but experts are worried that it may become endemic again, meaning continuous spread for over a year throughout the country. As Heaton pointed out, "At this rate, our outbreak will be part of the United States outbreaks that together may, we may lose that eradicated status for a while, just because of those numbers. That's kind of a discouraging threshold that we're getting closer to."

In addition, Georgia, Oregon, and Virginia each reported their first measles cases of the year recently. The CDC reports that approximately 95% of the confirmed cases nationally are among individuals who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown.

And this is the part most people miss... Only 2% of cases are among those who have received one dose of the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine, and another 2% are among those who have received the recommended two doses. The majority of cases are among patients under the age of 19, and about 1% of all measles patients in the U.S. have been hospitalized.

This rise in cases comes as the U.S. recorded its highest number of measles cases since 1992. Last year, there were 2,242 cases reported across more than 40 states. There were nearly 50 outbreaks nationally last year, compared to 16 in 2024 and only four in 2023.

Tragically, at least three deaths were recorded in 2025, including two among unvaccinated school-aged children in Texas and one among an unvaccinated adult in New Mexico, marking the first U.S. deaths from measles in a decade. The CDC currently recommends that people receive two doses of the MMR vaccine, with the first dose administered between 12 and 15 months of age and the second between 4 and 6 years old. One dose is 93% effective, and two doses are 97% effective against measles.

Important Note: Federal data indicates that vaccination rates have been declining in recent years. During the 2024-2025 school year, 92.5% of kindergartners received the MMR vaccine, which is lower than the 92.7% seen the previous school year and the 95.2% seen in the 2019-2020 school year before the COVID-19 pandemic.
