Imagine being just 17 years old, juggling the pressures of being a top-tier athlete in two sports, and having nearly every Major League Baseball (MLB) team knocking on your door. That’s the reality for Moeller High School’s Matt Ponatoski, a dual-sport phenom who’s not just aiming for the stars—he’s already reaching them. But here’s where it gets controversial: Can someone truly excel at both football and baseball at the highest level? Ponatoski is determined to prove the answer is yes.
As a senior at Moeller, Ponatoski has already spoken with representatives from 27 MLB teams, a staggering number that underscores his talent and potential. Signed to play both football and baseball at the University of Kentucky, he’s a rare breed of athlete who refuses to choose just one passion. His high school coach, Bert Bathiany, marvels at his ability to balance it all: ‘I’m amazed at how he manages everything all at once. He just loves it.’
And this is the part most people miss: Ponatoski’s success isn’t just about raw talent. It’s about relentless work ethic. While most teens his age are winding down, he’s studying the UK football playbook under new head coach Will Stein, hitting the batting cages on Sundays, and even finding time for golf, pilates, and pickleball. Yes, pickleball—because why not add another sport to the mix?
But Ponatoski’s dreams are as big as his talent. He’s eager to prove himself to Big Blue Nation, dreaming of playing football in front of 60,000 fans at Kroger Field. ‘That’s my dream,’ he says. ‘That’s what I live for.’ Yet, his immediate focus is on leading Moeller to a baseball state championship, a goal that’s eluded the team the past two seasons. ‘It’s not about me,’ he insists. ‘It’s about winning games.’
Here’s where opinions start to divide: While UK sees him as an infielder, MLB scouts are split—some view him as a pitcher, others as a hitter. Regardless, Ponatoski is confident in his ability to make an impact, pouring ‘120%’ into every opportunity. His effortless swing and natural athleticism have left coaches and scouts in awe, but it’s his humility and dedication that truly set him apart.
Off the field, Ponatoski is just a regular teenager who enjoys competitive pickleball matches with his family—no holding back, even against his uncles. But he’s also deeply thoughtful about his legacy. ‘I don’t want to be known as the football and baseball player,’ he says. ‘I want to be known as a really good human being. I want people to know me as Matt.’
As the MLB draft approaches on July 11, Ponatoski’s name will undoubtedly be in the spotlight. But whether he’s on the diamond, the gridiron, or the pickleball court, one thing is clear: Matt Ponatoski is a force to be reckoned with. What do you think? Can someone truly excel at two sports at the highest level? Or is Ponatoski’s ambition setting him up for an impossible choice? Let’s discuss in the comments!
