Melton Mowbray's Hidden Treasures: Unveiling Ancient Secrets and Controversies
Uncovering the Past: Before the construction of a new bypass in Melton Mowbray, archaeologists embarked on a journey to explore the town's hidden history. And what they found was extraordinary, sparking curiosity and debate among experts and locals alike.
During their excavations, archaeologists uncovered a fascinating array of ancient remains, painting a vivid picture of life in the area over millennia. Across 62 acres, they unearthed 11 sites that revealed a dynamic prehistoric and Roman farming landscape.
Aquatic Surprises: But here's where it gets intriguing. Among the discoveries were the remains of ancient aquatic creatures, including two ichthyosaur fossils. One of these marine reptiles was so massive that its snout, initially mistaken for a rock, required two men to lift it! These fossils, dating back to the Lower Jurassic period, were transported by glaciers and deposited in Melton around 200 million years ago.
Ancient Farming and Controversies: Further investigations unveiled a large and complex Roman farmstead, complete with Mediterranean-style agriculture. Imagine vineyards and orchards thriving in Roman Britain! But this discovery raises questions. Were these farms abandoned in the late Iron Age, as believed, or did they continue to flourish under different management? And what impact did the arrival of the Romans have on the local population and their farming practices?
The archaeological finds didn't stop there. An Anglo-Saxon settlement, complete with sunken buildings and ditches, was also discovered, showcasing the area's rich historical tapestry.
Impact and Preservation: The £134m road project, aimed at easing traffic congestion and enabling housing development, has inadvertently led to these remarkable discoveries. Many artifacts have been preserved and will be displayed in local museums, allowing the public to engage with Melton's ancient past.
Janna Walker, assistant director of highways and transport, emphasized the richness of the archaeological findings, stating, "The discovery of these settlements has provided invaluable insights into the area's history." But the question remains: how will these discoveries shape our understanding of Melton's past, and what secrets might still lie beneath the surface, waiting to be uncovered?
