Honolulu Power Outage: Thousands Without Power in McCully, Moʻiliʻili, Kapahulu (2026)

Imagine waking up to a dark morning, with your daily routine completely disrupted. That's the reality for over 4,500 residents in Honolulu's McCully, Moʻiliʻili, and Kapahulu neighborhoods, who were hit by a power outage on December 5, 2025. Hawaiian Electric reported the outage, which began around 8:30 a.m., leaving many in the dark.

But what caused this widespread disruption? Unfortunately, the details are still emerging, but what we know is that first responders were quickly dispatched to the scene to assist in restoring power.

Interestingly, Hawaiian Electric has clarified that this isn't a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS). This is important because PSPS events are often implemented as a preventative measure during high-risk weather conditions, like strong winds that could damage power lines.

What do you think caused the outage? Were you affected by this power outage? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
