Imagine a world where dietary restrictions don't mean sacrificing deliciousness. For those with Celiac disease or gluten sensitivities, finding a truly exceptional bakery can feel like an impossible dream. But what if I told you that dream exists, tucked away in South Nashville? Prepare to have your taste buds take flight with a review of The Gluten Free Goose!

As a Vanderbilt student navigating the challenges of Celiac disease, I know firsthand the struggle of finding quick, reliable, and actually good gluten-free options. So, stumbling upon The Gluten Free Goose felt like unearthing buried treasure. It's a bit of a drive – about 25 minutes from campus – but trust me, it's an adventure your stomach will thank you for.
The bakery’s exterior is immediately appealing. The bright neon sign practically screams, "Come on in!" and the clean, simple design is inviting. Through the large front windows, you get a peek behind the curtain, witnessing the bakers meticulously piping, glazing, and decorating each treat before it makes its way to the tempting display case.
Stepping inside, the atmosphere is unexpectedly serene and cozy. During my visit, the absence of music created a sense of calm. The soft, minimal color palette, combined with bright, warm lighting, added to the welcoming ambiance. Seating is limited, but it feels intentional, creating a more intimate experience.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Amy Cornell, the owner of The Gluten Free Goose. Her story is as heartwarming as the bakery's treats. Amy opened the bakery out of a personal need – a desire to enjoy gluten-free treats without compromising on taste or safety. And the name? It's an adorable tribute to her 13-year-old son, Goose!
Amy's personal connection to gluten-free living is the heart and soul of everything they do. The bakery is 100% gluten-free certified, and their production process is meticulous. But here's where it gets controversial... some might argue that gluten-free baking can never truly replicate the textures and flavors of traditional baked goods. The Gluten Free Goose is determined to prove them wrong. Furthermore, Amy's commitment extends beyond the bakery; she serves on the Board of Directors for the Vanderbilt Celiac Disease Research Fundraising Gala, solidifying the bakery's connection to the Vanderbilt community.
Since opening its doors on March 23, 2023, The Gluten Free Goose has attracted customers from far and wide. "We’ve had people fly in, get off the plane, and come here first," Amy shared, beaming with pride. "We get visitors from Indiana, across the Southeast, and a lot of Vanderbilt students too."
So, what are Amy's personal favorites? She confessed a fondness for the French cruller and the gluten-free bread, but also mentioned that their chocolate cake is legendary. With these recommendations in mind, I knew I had to embark on a tasting adventure. Below are my tasting notes, focusing on taste, texture, and overall experience:
French Cruller: $6.45
The cruller was a delightful explosion of sweetness, boasting a delicate flakiness that transported me to a Parisian patisserie. It was so good it made me want to hop on a plane to France just to get another one!
Rating: 9/10
Chocolate Eclair: $8.75
The eclair was pure perfection – smooth, light, and generously filled with just the right amount of cream. I devoured it in seconds and immediately craved another. This is the part most people miss... truly great eclairs are about balance, and The Gluten Free Goose nailed it.
Rating: 10/10
Pumpkin Swiss Roll: $6.00
This warm and comforting roll delivered fantastic flavor, but leaned a tad too sweet for my personal preference. Still, it evoked a sense of cozy autumn vibes and was undeniably perfect for the season.
Rating: 8/10
Pumpkin Muffin: $6.15
This was the quintessential pumpkin treat! Sweet, moist, and bursting with authentic pumpkin flavor, it was the ideal snack for any autumn enthusiast.
Rating: 10/10
Chocolate Chip Scone: $6.90
The first bite offered a satisfying crunch, which gradually gave way to a soft and chewy interior. While not my absolute favorite, it was still a commendable gluten-free option. And this is where opinions might diverge... some prefer a more crumbly scone, while others appreciate the chewiness.
Rating: 7/10
Overall, I'm incredibly happy I decided to venture out and give The Gluten Free Goose a try. It's without a doubt a spot worth adding to your list, and I know I'll be returning soon!
