Unveiling the Census: A Deep Dive into the Questions Shaping Our Nation's Future
On January 24, 2026, the government released a list of 33 questions that will be asked during the first phase of the census, scheduled to commence on April 1st. This phase is a crucial step towards understanding the demographics and living conditions of our citizens, and it's an exciting yet complex process that deserves our attention.
But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, where some interesting insights can be uncovered. The first phase involves creating a comprehensive list of households, with each state and union territory conducting a 30-day campaign to ensure no household is left unaccounted for. This phase will run until September 30th, giving officials ample time to gather detailed information.
During the survey, census officers will inquire about the ownership status of homes, their usage, the materials used for flooring and roofing, the number of rooms, and even the gender of the head of the household. But it doesn't stop there. Officers will also delve into the usage, condition, and occupancy of these homes, painting a detailed picture of our residential landscapes.
And this is the part most people miss: the census isn't just about counting heads. It's about understanding the living standards and basic amenities available to our citizens. Officers will ask about access to drinking water, sources of lighting, the availability and type of toilets, waste disposal methods, bathing facilities, kitchen availability, LPG and PNG connections, and even the primary fuel used for cooking. It's a comprehensive assessment of our nation's infrastructure and living conditions.
Furthermore, census workers will gather information on access to technology, including radio, television, internet facilities, laptops, computers, telephones, mobile phones, and smartphones. They'll also inquire about the primary grain consumed in households and the mobile number for census-related communications. Interestingly, citizens will have the option to self-enumerate during the 15 days leading up to the start of the 30-day household listing campaign.
The census is being conducted in two phases: the first phase, from April to September, will focus on household listing and housing census, while the second phase, in February 2027, will involve counting individuals.
