Activision Signals a Major Shift for Call of Duty: No More Back-to-Back MW or Black Ops Releases
The official Call of Duty X account dropped a candid post, acknowledging the franchise’s recent missteps and signaling a significant overhaul to the annual release rhythm. In their message, developers confirmed a major change to how Call of Duty will be rolled out each year, and they also announced a free trial window for the comparatively new Black Ops 7.

From the outset, the team admitted that Call of Duty hasn’t fully lived up to fans’ expectations, then promised to “deliver and overdeliver” on those expectations moving forward. They outlined a revised release plan, stating, “We will no longer do back-to-back releases of Modern Warfare or Black Ops games. The reasons are many, but the main one is to ensure we provide an absolutely unique experience each and every year.”
The developers also hinted at substantive innovations designed to push the franchise forward rather than simply iterating on existing ideas: “We will drive innovation that is meaningful, not incremental. While we aren’t sharing those plans today, we look forward to doing so when the time is right.”
Regarding Black Ops 7’s contentious launch, the team is letting the game prove itself. Beginning next week, Black Ops 7’s Multiplayer and Zombies modes will be available for a one-week free trial, giving players a firsthand chance to judge the game’s quality before forming a final verdict.
As noted in our review, the Multiplayer and Zombies experiences stand up well when judged separately from the underwhelming campaign. This trial window is likely to reinforce that perception within the broader community, especially since the campaign drew heavy criticism and stalled Black Ops 7’s momentum at launch.
In addition, the devs reinforced their pre-release commitments to outstanding seasonal content: “Your ongoing feedback will shape our seasonal updates over the coming months. Season 01 is the largest live season ever, and we’re just getting started. We won’t rest until Black Ops 7 earns its place among the best Black Ops titles we’ve ever made.”
These statements are bold, and Call of Duty isn’t new to empty promises. With that caveat, what’s your view of Activision’s approach? Share your thoughts in the comments.
