Barcelona's Financial Setbacks: Losing Multi-Million 'Levers' to Free Transfers
Barcelona's recent financial setbacks have been a topic of concern for the club, particularly regarding the potential loss of two multi-million 'levers' through free transfers. The club has been closely monitoring the market, especially players over whom they still hold economic rights, and has generated significant income from sell-on percentages in recent summers. Deals involving players like Jean-Clair Todibo, Chadi Riad, and Nico Gonzalez have brought substantial revenue.
However, according to SPORT, the January transfer window has left Barcelona without two potential revenue streams that could have been significant. Neither Oscar Mingueza nor Mika Marmol moved clubs despite having offers, and their contracts with Celta Vigo and Las Palmas, respectively, expire at the end of the season, making them free agents.
The situation with Oscar Mingueza is particularly disappointing for Barcelona. The club retained 50% of a future sale, but Celta Vigo had already refused to sell him a year ago and again in the summer, turning down significant proposals. Aston Villa and RB Leipzig offered figures close to €20 million, but no deal was completed. There were also exit options in January, yet Celta was unwilling to part with a regular starter for a reduced fee, given they would have had to share the proceeds with Barça.
Everything points to Mingueza leaving Celta on a free transfer at the end of the season. Renewal talks have come to nothing, and indications suggest the Spain international full-back will join Juventus at no cost next summer. Neither Celta nor Barcelona would receive any transfer fee, while the player would continue his career in a top-level project.
Mika Marmol's case is similar. With a €10 million release clause, the centre-back could have moved to Girona last summer, but no financial agreement was reached. The left-footed defender had received offers exceeding €7 million in the past, but Las Palmas insisted on collecting the full clause and sharing the proceeds with Barcelona, which ultimately blocked negotiations.
There has been little movement in January, meaning he is also set to leave on a free transfer in the summer. Barcelona will lose all rights over both players and, in the long term, would only be entitled to training compensation should any future transfer occur.
