Aussie Tax Time Blunders: Avoid These Common Mistakes (2026)

Tax season is a stressful time for many Aussies, and it seems that Aussies are making a common mistake that could cost them dearly. The issue? Lodging tax returns too early, before the ATO is ready to process refunds, leading to unexpected outcomes and potential financial losses.

According to H&R Block's latest figures, nearly half of Australians have encountered unexpected tax results, and six out of ten have doubts about the accuracy of their submissions. This is despite 77% of taxpayers believing their tax affairs are straightforward. The complexity of tax returns is on the rise, with 71% citing various factors adding to the challenge.

Mark Chapman, H&R Block's director of tax communications, advises patience. He suggests waiting until the second half of July to lodge tax returns, as the ATO's pre-fill information becomes more comprehensive. This is because the ATO collects a wide range of data, including wages, bank interest, government payments, and private health insurance details, to streamline the process.

The increasing complexity of financial affairs is a significant contributor to the issue. With multiple employers, side hustles, investments, and the gig economy, taxpayers are facing a maze of deductions and credits. Chapman highlights the surge in shares, ETFs, and cryptocurrencies, further complicating matters. Additionally, the rise of remote work necessitates a nuanced understanding of deduction methods.

The ATO's data matching program revealed discrepancies in 140,000 tax returns in 2025, with issues in employment income, interest, dividends, welfare payments, Medicare levy exemptions, and private health insurance. Over 595,000 returns were adjusted due to missing income, overstated deductions, and other errors.

ATO assistant commissioner Anita Challen emphasizes the benefits of waiting for the prefill options. She warns that early lodgement can lead to more work, as it increases the chances of missing information and mistakes, potentially delaying processing and requiring amendments. Despite the complexities, Chapman offers practical advice to Aussies.

His recommendations include taking a relaxed approach, maintaining thorough records, and only claiming deductions that can be substantiated. He also stresses the importance of claiming only genuine entitlements, ensuring all income is included, and seeking professional help when tax affairs become intricate. By following these guidelines, Aussies can navigate tax season with greater confidence and potentially avoid costly mistakes.
