AI-Generated Folk-Pop Hit Barred from Sweden's Official Charts (2026)

Imagine a world where a chart-topping hit song is suddenly banned from official rankings because it’s not created by a human. Sounds like science fiction? It’s happening right now in Sweden. A folk-pop track, I Know, You’re Not Mine (or Jag vet, du är inte min in Swedish), has been barred from Sweden’s official charts after it was revealed that the artist behind it, Jacub, is an AI creation. This controversial decision has sparked a heated debate about the role of artificial intelligence in music and whether AI-generated art deserves the same recognition as human-made works.

The song, which has garnered over 5 million streams globally and 200,000 in Sweden alone, initially soared to the top of Spotify’s rankings in the country. But here’s where it gets controversial: the Swedish music trade body, IFPI Sweden, excluded it from the official domestic chart, Sverigetopplistan, after discovering its AI origins. ‘Our rule is that if a song is mainly AI-generated, it doesn’t belong on the top list,’ explained Ludvig Werber, IFPI Sweden’s chief executive. This raises a critical question: Is AI-generated music a groundbreaking innovation or a threat to the authenticity of art?

The track, part of a six-song EP titled Kärleken är Bränd (Love is Burned), is an acoustic guitar-driven folk-pop piece. Jacub’s Spotify profile features a sketch of a bearded man in a T-shirt, adding a human-like touch to an otherwise artificial creation. But the truth came to light when investigative journalist Emanuel Karlsten uncovered that the song was registered to Stellar, a Danish music publisher, with two credited rights holders working in the company’s AI department. ‘Stellar is testing the limits of what audiences will accept as “real” music,’ Karlsten wrote, highlighting the publisher’s ambition to push boundaries in the industry.

Stellar defended its approach, stating that Jacub’s voice and parts of the music were created using AI as a tool in their creative process. ‘We are not a tech company but a music company run by passionate professionals,’ they emphasized, arguing that creating a hit required more than just prompting an AI tool. They also distanced themselves from ‘AI music slop’—mass-produced, nonsensical content that floods platforms like Spotify. And this is the part most people miss: While Spotify doesn’t require AI-generated music to be labeled, it has been aggressively removing AI-made spam tracks, which generate royalties for scammers and dilute earnings for legitimate artists.

Jacub isn’t the first AI artist to gain traction. Last year, the ‘band’ Velvet Sundown racked up over 1 million Spotify streams before it was revealed that everything—from the music to the promotional images and backstory—was AI-generated. Their most popular song now has 4 million streams. This trend has led figures like composer and copyright campaigner Ed Newton-Rex to call for mandatory AI labeling. ‘If Spotify had labeled this as AI music, it wouldn’t have taken streams and royalties from human artists,’ he argued. ‘Governments need to act urgently to require clear AI labeling.’

Spotify, headquartered in Sweden, has pledged support for a new industry standard for disclosing AI use in music creation, developed by the nonprofit DDEX. However, participation will be voluntary, leaving the issue far from resolved. Is this the future of music, or are we crossing a line that undermines human creativity? Let us know your thoughts in the comments—do AI artists deserve a spot on the charts, or should we reserve that space for human talent?
